Bedroom Feng Shui is the practice of arranging the bed, door, and storage so the room supports rest. The first job is almost always the bed relative to the door, not a lucky color or a crystal on the nightstand.
Form School language calls the preferred layout a commanding position: you can see the entrance, you are not in the door's center line, and a solid wall backs the headboard. Compass schools may add a facing direction. Those are different systems. This page stays with layout you can check in a rental tonight.
Why the bed comes first
You spend more hours in bed than at any other piece of furniture. Classical Form School writing treats the bed like a desk or stove: the body should not sit in a corridor of traffic. Modern Western Feng Shui repeats the same picture with different words. Compass and Flying Stars schools can disagree on which wall is "best" for a given year. If two sources conflict, the honest move is to name the school, not to pick a winner and call it science.
What this page will not do is claim that a door-aligned bed causes insomnia or that paired lamps create a relationship. Sleep and partnership have many non-Feng-Shui causes. Layout can still feel calmer when the door is visible and the floor is clear.
Command position without a floor-plan app
Stand in the doorway. Look at the bed.
- If the mattress sits in a straight shot from the threshold, most Form School notes call that a weak or "coffin" alignment. Shift the bed along the wall so you still see the door from the pillow, but you are not the first object incoming chi hits.
- If your back is to the door when you sit up, you lose the view. A low dresser opposite the door is not a substitute for seeing the opening.
- A window behind the headboard is a different problem from the door. Soften it with a solid headboard and heavy curtains. Do not treat a window wall as a mountain.
If the room is too small to move the bed, keep the headboard, add a bench or trunk at the foot, and stop using the door as a clothes hook. Those are reversible.
For color after layout, use the bedroom colors guide. For night-specific habits, use the sleep guide.
School differences you should expect
Form School / commanding position. Geometry of door, bed, and solid backing. No compass required.
Eight Mansions / personal kua. Some practitioners assign a favorable sleeping direction from a birth-year number. Other schools ignore kua entirely. If a site says "everyone must sleep east," it is collapsing systems.
BTB / Western bagua. The relationship gua is often the far-right corner from the door. That is an overlay, not a Form School bed rule. Pairing nightstands is a BTB-style symbol, not a classical requirement.
Flying Stars. Annual stars can mark a bedroom as more or less active in a given year. That advice expires. Do not copy a 2024 star map onto a 2026 room without checking the year.
When you read two blogs that contradict each other, check which system they are using before you move furniture twice.
A renter sequence you can finish in one evening
- Strip the floor path from door to bed. Bags and laundry are the usual block.
- Empty under the bed or switch to closed fabric bins of sheets only.
- Match nightstand height if you have two people. One side empty is a modern relationship cue, not a medical claim. See couples bedroom if that is the actual job.
- Point screens away from the pillow or take the TV out. Active light is a sleep issue even without Feng Shui.
- Close closet doors. Overflowing hangers read as unfinished work. The closet guide covers wardrobe mirrors.
- Photograph the room from the door and from the pillow. That pair of shots is what you scan in the app.
What to skip
Do not promise wealth from a purple throw. Do not hang a mirror so you stare at yourself in bed if the goal is rest. Do not add a fountain. Water features in a bedroom are a common modern caution because the sound and the water element feel activating.
Kids' rooms and guest rooms share the bed-and-door logic but not the romance pairing. Use the kids and guest guides in this hub instead of forcing couple imagery into a child's space.
How to judge a change
After you move the bed, sleep in it for a few nights before buying objects. If you still cannot see the door, a small, stable mirror on a dresser can show the opening. That is a workaround, not a ranking trick.
If the only wall that fits the bed is the door line, write down the constraint. The useful article is then "what if I cannot move the bed," not a second URL that repeats the same command-position lecture.
Sources and limits
Placement notes here follow widely taught Form School and modern practitioner descriptions. They are not a clinical sleep protocol. Empirical research on Feng Shui as a whole is limited and mixed. Treat health claims as out of scope.
