Feng Shui wind chimes are an object that makes sound where air moves, used as a metal, wood, or earth accent. Rod counts and yearly-star stories are extras. A chime will not pay a bill or clear a curse.
When we photograph entries, the chime is inside a still hallway or over a child's bed. People ask for six rods. The door still hits a shoe rack. This guide is hang-where-it-moves, then stop.

What job does a chime do?
Traditional uses: slow rushing movement at a gate, mark a corner, or (in some Flying Stars notes) occupy a sector with metal sound. The physical job is noise and a hanging mass. Neighbors and sleepers have a vote.
If there is no breeze, you have a silent sculpture. Put it outside or skip it.
Rods, without the payroll
These are popular lists, not measurements.
- 5 metal: yearly affliction extra in some Flying Stars writing. The year changes. Do not leave a 2019 cure up as dogma.
- 6 metal: northwest / mentors in many modern notes.
- 7: west / children talk.
- 8: wealth lists.
- 9: south / completion talk.
If the only chime you like has 4 tubes, hang the one you like where it is allowed. Sound you enjoy beats a number you resent.
Material and a wall
Metal chimes in a south (fire) gua are the "clash" caution. Bamboo in east or southeast sits easier in wood talk. Ceramic in earth corners (northeast, southwest, center) is the grounding story.
You can also ignore the map and hang the chime on the porch because that is where the wind is. Form School path work does not require tubes.
Where to hang, where not
Often fine. Porch, garden near the path, a side of the entry that does not block the swing, outside a sharp corner of a neighboring wall if the lease and the neighbor allow.
Usually a no. Bedroom (sleep). Over the dining table (crumbs and argument). Bathroom. A still interior hall. Against a wall it will hit at 2 a.m.
A chime aimed at "poison arrows" (sharp corners) is a common modern extra. A plant or a screen can do the same visual job without the clank.
Glass and shell chimes exist too. They break and they are loud in a different way. Treat them as decor unless you already have a map for earth or water on that wall. Most rentals are fine with one metal or one bamboo, not a collection.
Renters
A hook you can remove. Ask before drilling brick. Indoor chimes in a sealed apartment are mostly decor. Do not annoy the unit below.
Garden chimes belong on the path, not over a neighbor's window. Garden covers plants and gates. A chime that only plays when a truck passes is an alley problem, not a gua.
If the sharp corner is a building you do not own, a pot by your own door is the part you control. A chime in a sealed stairwell will only annoy the people who carry groceries. Hang it where wind already exists.
A sequence this weekend
- Stand at the door. Is there air? If not, porch or nothing.
- Pick metal or bamboo for the sound you want.
- Hang off the swing and off the bed wall.
- Listen one night. If you hate it, take it down. That is the test.
Broken chimes (missing tube, tangled cord) are clutter that also makes a bad noise. Fix or recycle. Do not leave a wreck "to keep the metal in the sector."
A recorded-chime speaker is a gadget. If you want sound without hanging hardware, a small outdoor bell you like is closer to the object this page is about. Do not loop a chime track on a Bluetooth speaker and call it Flying Stars. The neighbors will call it something else.
What to skip
Do not promise luck, mentors, or wealth from a rod count. Do not paste an App Store URL in the body. Do not hang a chime over a crib. Do not use a 5-rod story as a substitute for a clear landing.
If the problem is the door, fix the landing first.
How to judge a change
You hear it in a breeze and not through the pillow. The door still opens 90 degrees.
