Feng Shui used furniture is a sound frame, a smell you can wash out, and a piece that fits the walk. Other people's leftover luck is not in the joints. You check wobble with a flashlight, you smell the fabric, then you measure the aisle before the piece comes home.
When we photograph rentals after a weekend of marketplace pickups, the expensive miss is a dresser that looked honest in a dark garage and then twisted in the hallway. People ask how to clear the last owner's energy. We ask them to lift a corner. If the frame wracks, there is nothing to smudge. How do you check a used furniture frame?
Do it where the piece is, in daylight or with a flashlight you brought. Seller lighting lies the same way store lighting lies. You want joints, not atmosphere.
Lift one corner of a chair, table, or small dresser. Watch the opposite corner. If the frame twists, the joinery is tired. A friendly creak when you sit is wood. A crack or a sudden drop is a fail.
Sit hard. Stand and rock. Dining chairs fail here more than photos show. A rail that is loose in the socket will be loose on night two in your kitchen.
Open every drawer fully. Warped boxes that scrape will scrape forever. Look at the runners. Missing or chewed wood on a runner is a skip unless you like workshop time.
Turn the piece if you can. Shine the light on the underside. Look for screws that have stripped their holes, glue that has opened into a gap, and cardboard backs that are tearing off. That flashlight on the joint is the whole frame test. You are looking for a gap, a twist, and crumbs of wood that do not belong. If the listing photo never showed this angle, assume the seller did not want you to see it.
Metal frames: look at welds and bolts. Surface rust on a garden chair you will keep outside is a judgment call. Rust that has eaten a bolt head on a bed rail is a skip. Do not bring a crumbling rail into a rental and then ask the landlord about wall damage when it fails.
Particle board with bloated edges has already met water. It will not get braver in a humid flat. Solid wood with a scarred top is a refinish candidate if the apron is honest. Refinish steps live on the furniture hub. Do not buy sandpaper for a wobble.
Cam locks that spin forever (the used flat pack classic) mean the particle has stripped. You can sometimes move a cam to fresh board. In a one year lease, that is optional homework, not a bargain.
What the frame test is not
It is not a séance. It is not a story about who sat there. A repaired rail with honest new glue and a square sit can be a good chair. A pristine varnish on a wracked frame is still a wracked frame.
Beds: test the rails and slats. Then buy a new mattress. The mattress section below is hygiene. The frame can still be used.
Sofas: press the deck. A broken spring is trash you pay to haul. That is not sofa placement. That is whether the object is still a sofa.
What smell is a pass and what is a skip?
Smell the fabric, the underside, and a drawer interior. Do it before you like the shape. Once you like the shape, your nose gets polite.
Smoke lives in foam. Mildew lives in the same foam and in the back panel. Pet urine lives in the frame rails people never wipe. A heavy perfume or essential oil on the cloth is often a cover. If you smell the cover more than the wood, ask what they are hiding.
A pass is a smell that leaves after you air the piece and wash what you can wash. Dust, a garage, a faint wood shop odor. Those fade.
A skip is a smell that is still there at the joint after a week of open windows and a real wash. You will smell it every time you sit. Folklore will call that old energy. It is old smoke or old damp.
Do not buy a spray and a prayer. If the seller sprayed something while you stood there, leave.
Wood that only smells like wood oil you will apply yourself is a pass. Upholstery you cannot wash that already smells like a cellar is a skip.
Air, then decide
If you already brought a maybe home, park it on a drop cloth by a window you can open. Not in the only path to the front door. Not in a closed bedroom.
Wipe hard surfaces with soap and water. Wash a zip cover on the hottest setting the fabric allows. If the smell is gone in a few days, keep going with the walk test. If it is not, the piece goes back out. A rental that smells like someone else's sofa is a deposit conversation you do not need.
The renter guide still wins on paint and floors. Keep stripper and heavy oil off a landlord's timber. A wash is soap, cloth, air.
Can you wash used fabric enough to keep the piece?
Only if you can reach the fabric you sit on. A cover that zips off is the easy yes. Wipeable vinyl or leather (real or not) is a wipe. A fixed cloth sofa with mystery foam is a gamble you should usually refuse.
That cloth on the cushion is the wash test. If you cannot do this at home, you cannot keep the piece honest. A pretty throw on top of a sour seat is camouflage.
Check the cushion unzipped if it unzips. Foam that is orange, crumbling, or wet in the middle is a skip. Replacing foam is a project. Name it as a project before you pay.
Dining chair pads that tie on should come off and go in a machine. If they are stapled and stained, budget new pads or leave the chairs.
Do not invent a folklore about washing "chi" out of cloth. You are washing dirt, smoke, and skin. That is enough reason.
Wood seats wipe. Cane that is brittle will snap. Sit gently on cane in the seller's house. If it crackles, it is decoration, not a chair.
What you skip on fabric
Skip a stain you cannot name on a seat you cannot unzip. Skip pet hair packed into a weave if you are allergic to the work of cleaning it. Skip "professionally cleaned" as a phrase with no receipt and a smell still present.

Should you buy a used mattress?
No. Skip used mattresses. This is hygiene. You cannot wash a mattress the way you wash a chair cover. You cannot see what lived in it. Feng Shui stories about old sleep energy are a distraction. The practical reason is enough.
A used bed frame, a used headboard you can wipe, a used slat set that does not sag: those can pass the frame test. Put a new mattress you own on top. The bedroom hub owns how the bed sits in the room. This page only says the sleep surface is new.
Used pillows and used duvets follow the mattress rule. Use a washable blanket if you like, and wash it hot.
Box springs and bases: if they are wood and tight, treat them as frame. If they are a fabric box you cannot open, skip them the way you skip a mattress.
How do you measure the walk before the piece comes home?

Measure the door you use, the stair turn, the elevator if you have one, and the pinch in the room. Write the numbers. Measure the piece at the seller's, including how far drawers open and how far a chair pulls from the table.
Tape a footprint on your floor before you drive. Live with it for an evening. If you turn sideways in your own hallway, do not pick up.

Delivery day for used is often you, a friend, and a hatchback. Clear the path from the building door to the room first. The mouth of the home is still a physical test: can two people carry a table without hitting the latch.
Photograph empty corners. If the piece does not fit, you have a photo for the listing chat. Do not "just angle it" through plaster you have to paint at move-out.
Bring a flashlight, a tape measure, a cloth, and a blanket so the piece does not eat your car and then your wall. Agree payment before you lift.
Inspect before you load. The parking lot of a marketplace meetup is a legal place to lift a corner. A dim stairwell is how stripped cams go unnoticed.
If the seller will not let you sit, lift, or open, you do not have an inspection. You have a photo. Leave.
What this is not
Used furniture will not transfer leftover luck. It will not raise income. Walnut is still wood, and a scratch is still a scratch.

A simple pickup checklist
Do this in order. Stop when the piece fails.
- Measure the walk at home. Write the pinch. Take the tape with you.
- In daylight or with your flashlight, lift a corner. Watch for twist.
- Sit hard. Open drawers. Check the back panel.
- Smell fabric, underside, and drawers. Leave if the smell is smoke, mildew, or urine you cannot wash.
- Confirm you can wash or wipe the sit surface. Skip used mattresses.
- If it passes, photograph your room from the door in FengShui Hero, then compare the flagged walk with the tape before you load the car.
If you only do one thing tonight, put a flashlight on the piece already in the hallway and lift one corner. If it twists or the smell hits you at the joint, it does not come further in. Tomorrow's listing can wait until the bag has tape, a cloth, and the light.
