Feng Shui balcony rules are the practice of treating a small outdoor slab as a room: a clear walk from the sliding door to the rail, plants along the sides, and laundry that does not block the glass. You are arranging pots and a drying rack, not landscaping a courtyard. The balcony is where apartment chi meets weather.
When we photograph rentals, the balcony is often a second closet. Dead basil, a rack of shirts in the door, a bike on its side, a broken chair. People ask which compass corner the railing is. What is a Feng Shui balcony?
It is the outdoor mouth of an apartment: the slider, the slab, the rail. Form School cares about path, gate, and whether a house feels hugged or exposed. A balcony is that idea at two meters deep. You cannot curve a concrete rectangle into a garden path. You can stop using it as overflow storage.
This is narrower than a full garden page. That article wants meandering walks, yard water, and planting beds. Here the "path" is the line from glass to rail. If that line is a drying rack, the outdoor room is closed even when the door is unlocked.
It is also an extension of indoor layout. A small apartment already fights for zones. The balcony is one more zone, not a place to exile clutter so the living room photographs better. If the chair on the deck is the only seat that can see sky, keep the walk to it honest.
Chi talk on balconies usually means air and attention. A blocked slider is stale because you never open it. A row of living plants along the rail is ordinary upkeep. Neither requires a bagua sticker on the glass.

Where should plants sit on a balcony?

Underwear on the rail facing the street is a taste problem more than a chi problem. If it bothers you, use the indoor rack or time the drying when you are home. We will not invent a folklore about garments "draining" the home. We will say a balcony that looks like a laundromat is a poor place to sit.
Bikes, boxes, and a freezer on the slab are the same class of problem as laundry: the outdoor room became overflow. If you must store a bike, strap it to the far end, not across the door. If you must keep boxes, they do not belong on the only outdoor floor. Find indoor storage or let them go.
That rack is doing laundry in the doorway. The plants are fine. The door is not. Slide the rack along the rail until the glass can open the way it was designed to.
How do you keep the slider from stalling?
The slider is the balcony's front door. Keep the track clean. Keep a mat inside that does not bunch under the panel. Keep the first meter of slab clear.
If you sit outside, angle a chair so you can see the glass the way a sofa sees an entrance. A back fully to the door on a high floor can feel like a stage. On a tiny balcony, one chair at the far end, turned a quarter toward the apartment, is enough. You are not building a command-position living room. You are not sitting with your spine in the only exit.
Sharp corners from a neighboring wall, a staircase, or a pointed roof are the Form School "sha" conversation. Renters cannot move those buildings. A pot, a small screen allowed by the lease, or simply sitting off-axis is the honest response. Do not buy a bagua mirror for a balcony rail unless that object is already part of how you live. Can renters change a balcony without drilling?
Pots, a folding rack, a folding table, two chairs, a washable mat. That is the kit. Renters already know the rule: if you cannot restore it, do not install it.
Skip drilling the rail for planter boxes unless the lease says yes in writing. Skip painting the concrete a "lucky" color. Skip attaching wind chimes that annoy the floor below. Sound travels down a well of balconies.
A privacy screen on weighted feet is kinder than screws. Check wind ratings. A sail that becomes a kite is a hazard, not an enhancement.
If the balcony is illegal storage according to fire code, the code wins. Do not stack furniture in front of an escape window and call it a wealth corner. Clear path is the whole outdoor method, and it is also the safety method.

Do this in order. Stop when you can walk out with a cup.

- Sweep. Throw dead plants. Empty saucers that smell.

- Park the drying rack to the side. Fold it when the wash is in.

Skip mystic grids on the decking. Skip guaranteed wealth from a particular pot color. Earth-tone terracotta is here because it survives weather and matches a rental wall, not because brown is a secret.
Write down what you moved. The next time you look at a listing, you will remember that "private balcony" meant a drying rack in the door and one dead fern. That note is worth more than a slogan about outdoor energy.
