A Feng Shui west-facing house is a home whose main door faces west on a compass. Late sun hits the rooms behind that door harder than it hits a north door. You treat glare and heat at the glass as layout work, not as a lucky year.
When we photograph west rooms, the sofa is usually the first casualty. The back is shoved against the pane. The fabric has a pale stripe where the sun parks every afternoon. People still ask which year will "activate" the west because a blog promised metal luck. We ask them to sit down at 4 p.m. If they squint, the layout is already doing the talking. This guide is that test, then the rental fixes.
What is a Feng Shui west-facing house?
Facing is the compass heading of the door you actually use. You stand inside, on the threshold, and look out the way a guest leaves. That direction is facing. Sitting is the opposite wall. The compass facing method is the reading. This page is what to do with the rooms once the needle says west.
A west window is not the same job. Plenty of east-facing apartments have a bedroom that cooks at 5 p.m. because the glass looks west. Call that a west window. Do not relabel the whole house. The facing-house article is about the door. Form School still goes first: a path you can walk, and a bed that is not in a doorway. A perfect west number on a blocked mat is homework.
Compass school may put metal on west. That pairing lives in the five elements cycle as an optional overlay. White or gray paint, or a round object you already own, is the usual stand-in. You do not owe the living room a chrome makeover because the door faces the afternoon. Sun control is the daily work. Metal is extra, and only if you want the map.
In an apartment, facing is the door you unlock, even if it opens onto a hallway. The lobby belongs to the building. Your mat and the first room still belong to you.
How do you know the house faces west?
Stand just inside the door you exit most days. Hold the compass flat at chest height. Wait until the needle stops. If the needle hunts, you are next to a steel slab or a phone case with a magnet. Step one pace back onto wood or tile, then step forward again.
Do this at the door, not in the kitchen. Three readings that agree are enough. If they jump, discard the indoor set and read outside, then walk the number back in. For a rental overlay, "west-ish" is enough.
Phone compass versus afternoon sun
A phone compass is fine if you calibrate it and keep it off the metal frame. It still beats guessing from the street sign. A house on West Street can face south. Low sun on the porch in late afternoon is a hint, not a heading. Use the hint to decide when to sit on the sofa and check glare. Use the compass to name facing.
If the needle sits between west and northwest, take readings in the morning and in the evening. Use the heading that repeats. You do not need two facing stories on one slab.
Why does west sun fade fabric and heat a room?
Sit where you actually sit, at the worst hour, usually late afternoon. Notice whether you squint, and whether the cushion is warmer than the one in shade.
West glass gets a long, low sun. Morning light on an east window is shorter in many floor plans. The west hit lasts while you are home, often while a screen is on. What if only one room takes the hit?
Name the room. A west living room wants drapes and a pulled sofa. A west bedroom wants the bed off the glass if you can, and a covering you will actually close before the sun arrives. A west kitchen is often a sink wall you cannot relocate, so close a blind at 3 p.m. and sit elsewhere until the beam drops.
Do not "balance" a hot west room by stacking metal objects on the sill. That is clutter in the sun. Clear the sill so the drape can shut.
Does west mean metal, and is that a lucky year?
In many compass notes, west is metal, with talk of children or completion. Northwest is metal with "helpful people" talk. Those are labels. They are not outcomes. If you want the overlay, add one pale or round object you already own after the path is clear. A round clock and a cream wall are already doing that job in a lot of rentals.

Some five-element lists pair metal with breathing. That is a correspondence chart, not a clinic. Heat and glare are comfort. A doctor is for symptoms.
Where should the sofa sit in a west-facing living room?
Command still matters. You want a view of the room's door without sitting in the doorway. West sun does not cancel that. It adds a second constraint: the back should not be a solar collector.
Pull the sofa slightly off the glass. Even a small gap helps. If the only wall that sees the door is the window wall, keep the view and add a drape you can close. A sofa floating in the middle of a small rental can work if the path around it stays walkable. Felt sliders make the move reversible.
Heavier fabric belongs on the lower window, where the beam hits faces and cushions. Sheers can stay on the upper pane for daylight. That split is ordinary window dressing. It is not a ritual. Close the heavy layer when the sun arrives. Open it when the beam has dropped.
A TV opposite west glass will fight you every evening. Put the screen on a side wall if the room allows it, or accept that you will draw the drape before you watch. Covering the set when it is off is a glare trick, not a requirement of this article.

Plants and the sill
West glass can burn a thin leaf, so pull the pot inward and water it. A dead plant next to a correct heading is still a dead plant. You do not need a metal planter to "complete" west.
Keep the sill empty enough that the drape can travel. Mail and a row of frames in the beam are clutter that also fades.
What can renters change without painting?
Most of the work is sliding and hanging. Felt pads under the sofa. A tension rod inside the window recess so you are not drilling the casing. Stick-on film is the more committed renter option if the lease allows it. Read the product for move-out, and ask in writing if the glass is landlord property.
Do not unbolt a window. Photograph the recess before you add a rod so you remember the original look for the deposit.
Door color is separate. If the slab is builder beige and you may not paint, a white or gray wreath and a pale mat still carry the west map. Hardware that is already chrome is already metal. Stop there. A full red door on a west heading is the clash the color article flags. If you inherited red, a yellow-beige mat is the small patch.
Shared buildings: you still control your door and your first room. You do not control the corridor's west window. Close your own drape. A small gap behind a sofa is ugly in a listing photo and kinder at 5 p.m. If the only comfortable seat is in the beam, rotate the chair for the hot hour and put it back after.
A weekend sequence
Do this in order. Stop when you can sit at 4 p.m. without squinting.
- Stand inside the door you use. Take three compass readings at the threshold. Write facing on a note with the date.
- If it is west (or west-ish), walk the first room and name every west pane.
- Lie or sit where you actually sit. Mark fabric that is already paler, and any screen that turns into a mirror.
- Pull the sofa or chairs off the glass. Hang a heavier lower drape or a tension-rod panel you will close in the afternoon.
- If you want the optional metal map, leave one pale or round object you already own. Do not shop for a lucky-year kit.

What this is not
A west-facing door will not make you rich. It will not ruin you if the sofa stays against the glass for a week while you wait for a rod. People get stuck on lucky metal years and skip the compass they can hold in their hand.
Skip religious symbols you do not already use. Skip hanging a bagua on the rental slab. Skip medical claims about metal and lungs. Skip promising a good year because a calendar said west is "in." Facing and a seat that is not a radiator are the whole method.
