Feng Shui how to hold a luo pan is a level plate at chest height, off steel, until three readings match. A phone is a backup. Skip flying-star rings.

Feng Shui how to hold a luo pan is keeping the square earth plate level at chest height, a step off steel, until the south-pointing needle settles and three readings of the red cross line agree. A phone compass is a backup magnetometer. It is not a 40-ring plate. Renters skip flying-star rings until the latch already works.

When we photograph doorways, the phone compass is already open and hunting. The plate is still in a box, or it is pressed against the steel jamb. People ask which 15-degree mountain will fix Tuesday. We take the phone out of the pocket, step onto wood, and wait until a needle stops. The compass guide owns facing labels. Compass school explained is the gate: degrees only after a seat already sees the latch. Facing versus sitting is two words people swap. This page is the hold.

How we check a hold in a real doorway

We use the door they unlock on a workday, not the bolted facade leaf. We stand just inside, looking out, the way a guest leaves. We hold whatever instrument they actually own: a square plate, a round hiking compass, or a phone. We do not rest it on the metal threshold.

Then we cheat on purpose. We slide the plate toward the hinge and watch the needle lunge. We tilt it until the needle drags on glass. We put the phone back in a magnet wallet case. That is the diagnosis. A reading you cannot repeat is trash. We step one pace onto wood or out onto the stoop, take three quiet headings, and write the one that repeats.

Hosts: shoot the stay the way a guest leaves, with the daily door, not a listing crop of a pretty leaf nobody uses. A leased shop uses the staff door if that is the mouth. If the swing is a pile, put the plate down. Form school owns that score.

How do you hold a luo pan so the needle can settle?

Hold the square base in both hands, keep the inner disk free to turn, and keep the plate level between waist and chest. Stand with your feet apart enough that you are not swaying. Then wait.

Wikipedia's luopan page names the parts we actually use tonight. The square wooden base is the earth plate. The round disk with rings is the heaven dial. It rotates on the base. A red thread (sometimes a wire) crosses the plate at right angles. That cross is the read line. The needle lives in a glass well in the center.

Turn the heaven dial until the needle lines up with the south marks in that well. On many plates those marks are two dots or a thin south bar. Then look along the red thread in the direction your nose points as you step out. That thread on the outer rings is facing for this job. Sitting is the opposite thread, behind you.

If the needle still skates, you are tilted, moving, or next to metal. Look down into the well from above, not from a slant. Some plates have a bubble level on the earth plate. If yours does not, the needle itself is the tell: a dragged needle is a tilted plate.

Do not pinch the inner disk while you wait. Do not hold keys, a second phone, or a metal travel mug in the same hands. A belt buckle against the plate is the same problem as a fridge. Take a half step back.

Two hands holding a square luo pan with a brass heaven dial, red cross threads, and a needle in the glass well

That still is the part you actually read: needle, south marks, red cross. If your photo is a plate on a slant with the needle jammed on glass, flatten it and wait. Do not hunt a ring name while it is still bouncing.

Classroom plates can carry many concentric rings. Wikipedia notes up to about forty, plus 24 direction marks at 15 degrees each. You do not owe those rings a shopping night. For a rental overlay, the job is a facing word you can repeat.

Chest height keeps the plate off the steel strip in the floor. A photo of a plate sitting on oak is a comparison, not a good place to take the number. Stand just inside or just outside, facing out. Side door counts if that is the daily mouth. A patio you never open is not facing. Name which leaf you used.

A small analog hiking compass uses the same body: two hands, level, off steel, three repeats. It lacks the red cross. Write "hiking compass" on the scrap so you do not mix it with a later plate reading.

Which end of the needle do you trust?

Wikipedia's luopan page says the needle points toward the south magnetic pole. The Chinese compass name is often glossed as a south-pointing needle. A cheap hiking compass in a US or UK shop usually paints the north end red. Phone compass apps usually report the heading of the top of the phone toward north (magnetic or true, depending on the app).

If you treat a luo pan as if the colored end were "north, like my hiking compass," you can write the house as the opposite facing. That is a labeling error, not a cursed door.

  1. Name the tool on the scrap: luo pan, hiking compass, or phone.
  2. For a luo pan, line the needle with the south marks in the well, then read the red thread looking out.
  3. For a hiking compass, hold it level, wait, and read the north end against the degree ring looking out.
  4. For a phone, hold it level, wait, and read the heading the app shows for the direction you are facing as you step out.
  5. Do not average a luo pan south reading with a phone north reading.

You only need one instrument tonight. If you own both, take the plate reading first with the phone in another room. Then check whether the phone names the same word (south, west) after you account for which way each tool points. A word match is the rental win. A five-degree argument is a classroom fight.

Magnetic north is not the north arrow on a building plan. Some map apps show true north. NOAA publishes a magnetic declination calculator if you need that split. For a sticky-note overlay, write "magnetic" on the plan and stop. Do not invent a local degree from memory.

Can a phone compass replace a real plate?

A phone can name facing. It cannot give you rings you are not going to use.

ToolWhat it is good for tonightTypical missRenter note
Phone compassA facing word after a figure-eight calibrateMagnet case, fridge wall, true-north maps mode, a tilted screenEnough if three readings agree off steel
Analog hiking compassA heading without a shopping-tab plateReading the south end as north, resting it on the thresholdCheap, reverses, no rings to argue about
Luo pan plateSame heading, plus a red cross tied to the door lineTilt, steel, using the wrong end of the needle, hunting extra ringsOptional. Do not buy forty rings to hang a plant

A phone is a magnetometer next to a speaker, a battery, and often a wallet magnet. Calibrate away from the fridge (the figure-eight your OS asks for). Hold the phone level at chest height. Take it out of a magnet case if the heading still hunts. Do not rest it on the steel strip.

The phone in that still is closed. A live compass app on the same sill, next to a steel hinge, is how two numbers appear that you then try to average. Put the phone down while the plate works. If you only own the phone, hold it in the air, off the strip, and treat it as the hiking-compass row.

You do not need a luo pan to decide whether a mat can stay. You need a heading you can repeat, or you need no heading at all. Skip the overlay when form fails.

Why do two readings disagree at the same door?

Because the doorway is a metal box, or because the hold changed.

Steel jambs are the usual indoor liar. Fridge walls, ovens, speakers, a laptop on a console, a bike in the hall, a car on the other side of a thin wall: all of that can yank a needle. A magnet case is a pocket-sized version of the same trick.

Tilt is the quiet liar. A plate that looks almost flat can still drag the needle. If the three numbers fan out, flatten the plate before you blame the building. Stay at chest height. A floor-strip reading and an eye-height reading are not one dataset.

If three indoor tries still disagree, go outside onto the stoop or the first step that is not a steel grate. Take three there. Walk the repeating word back in. Do not average six wild indoor numbers into a fake facing. The compass guide already banned that average.

That still is the steel fix: plate in the air, hinge in the background, body on wood. If your photo is knuckles against the metal frame, you are still in the fail. Step back until the needle calms, then ease toward the threshold only as far as it stays quiet.

Threshold, stoop, or room center?

Some luo pan manuals want the geometric center of the plan. That is a different site job. On this site, house facing is the way you look out of the door you actually use. Sitting at that door is the wall behind you.

Write which job you meant. Door facing is this page: daily latch, looking out, plate level. Furniture sitting is the wall behind a bed head or a chair back; see facing versus sitting. Do not rotate the bed off the latch because a plate said east. Personal kua lists wait until the latch still shows; see personal kua number. Skip a geometric-center reading for a rental overlay unless a teacher you already use requires it, and even then do not average it with the door heading.

A boundary between two 45-degree slices: pick the side that repeats. Do not activate both "wealth" stories. Your door path still matters more.

What this is not

It is not luck, income, or a medical outcome. A quiet needle will not raise rent or treat sleep. It will give you a word to write on paper.

It is not the compass guide with a longer shopping list. That page is facing labels and one school for a month. This page is hands, level, south marks, and why a plate and a phone argue in the same doorway.

It is not compass school as a permission slip. Shape still goes first. A perfect heading on a blocked landing is homework. Two 3x3 maps live on Black Hat versus compass bagua. Do not tape southeast and far-left-from-the-door in the same evening. Wikipedia lists San He and San Yuan plate types; you do not need a third plate tonight. This site will not tell you to hang metal every February because a ring has a year on it.

It is not a reason to rotate a bed. If a rotate hides the bedroom latch, undo it.

Tonight: three level readings, then stop

Do this in order. Stop when three headings agree, or when the needle will not settle and you keep the door that already opens.

  1. Unlock the door you actually use. Full swing. If the leaf hits a pile, that is a form job. Put the plate down.
  2. Take metal out of your hands and a magnet case off the phone. Put the phone in another room if you are using a plate.
  3. Stand a step off the steel jamb, looking out. Hold the plate (or hiking compass, or phone) level at chest height with both hands.
  4. Wait until the needle stops. On a luo pan, line it with the south marks, then read the red thread looking out. Write the heading and the tool name.
  5. Repeat twice without changing height. If the three disagree, go outside and try again. Keep the repeat. Do not average.
  6. Write facing and sitting on a paper plan. One school. No nails in landlord paint. Take the scrap when you move.

If you only do one thing, take three level readings a step off steel and keep the word that repeats. The rings can stay in the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you hold a luo pan?

Hold the square earth plate with both hands at chest height, level, a step off the steel jamb. Wait until the needle stops hunting. Turn the inner heaven dial so the needle lines up with its south marks, then read the red cross line in the direction you look when you step out. Repeat twice. Keep the heading that repeats.

Can I use a phone compass instead of a luo pan?

Yes, for a rental overlay that only needs a facing word such as south. Calibrate with a figure-eight, hold the phone level, and keep magnet cases and steel away. A phone will not give you the rings on a real plate. If the phone and a plate disagree, trust the plate away from metal, or go outside and recopy the repeat.

Does a luo pan point north or south?

Wikipedia's luopan page says the needle points toward the south magnetic pole. A hiking compass usually paints the north end red. Write which tool you used. Treating a luo pan as if the red end were north is how people label a door as the opposite heading.

Why does the needle jump at the front door?

Steel jambs, fridge walls, speakers, laptops, magnet wallet cases, keys in the same hand, and a tilted plate all yank a needle. Step onto wood or tile. Take the phone out of your pocket. If three indoor readings still hunt, stand on the stoop, then walk the repeating number back in. Do not average wild numbers.

Do I need a luo pan with forty rings?

No, for this job. Facing at the daily door is a heading, not a San Yuan shopping list. A cheap analog compass or a calibrated phone can name south-ish. Extra rings wait until you have a teacher for those formulas. This site will not run a flying-star year from a plate you bought tonight.

Should I take the reading at the center of the house?

Some classical site work uses the geometric center. On this site, house facing is the way you look out of the door you actually exit. Label which job you meant. A rental overlay starts at that latch. Do not mix a center reading and a door reading into one fake average.

How does FengShui Hero help with a luo pan?

Photograph from the door you exit, looking out, then in. The scan flags a blocked swing. Use this article for the hold: level plate, south needle, three matching readings off steel. The app will not print a 24-mountain name.
