Feng Shui Career Area: North Gua vs Desk You Can See

By FengShui Hero Editorial · · · 4 min read

We check classical bagua, five-element, and placement guidance against what the FengShui Hero iOS camera analysis flags in real rooms.

The Feng Shui career area is a bagua overlay (often north or the door wall), not a promotion switch. Desk sightline first. Water objects optional.

The Feng Shui career area is a bagua overlay some schools put on a floor plan, usually tied to water and to "path" or work. It is not a promotion switch. Your chair still needs to see the door.

When we photograph home offices, people put a fountain in a dark corner and sit with their back to the entry. The gua got a gadget. The job of the room did not. This guide is how to pick one map, then add one object, after the desk works.

How to draw the grid: bagua map. The chair: desk position. The room: office layout.

What is the career area?

Two common answers, and they are not the same wall in every home.

Compass / classical-flavored notes. North is water. Career and "journey" language sit there. You need a compass, away from the metal file cabinet.

BTB / Western bagua. Stand at the front door looking in. The front-center third is often labeled career or path. No compass. The map rotates with the door.

If a blog says "always the north sector at the bottom of the bagua," it has already collapsed the two. Draw the door-based map and the compass map on a scrap of paper. If they land on different rooms, pick the system you will actually keep. Do not activate both with two fountains.

Form School can skip the gua entirely and still place a useful desk.

Desk first, gua second

Command position is geometry: door in view, solid back, not in the center line. That is the daily career support most people mean when they say the room "feels weak."

A north fountain behind your head does not fix a back-to-the-door chair. Do the move in the desk guide, then come back here.

How to locate one career wall

Door method. Tape the floor into nine like a tic-tac-toe from the entrance. Front-center is your career gua for this method. In a studio that may be the doormat. In that case the "activation" is a clear mat and a working light, not a tank.

Compass method. Find north. The north wall or north-most room is the career zone. A north bathroom is a common conflict in bagua talk (water already there, plus drain symbolism). Keep it clean and closed. Do not add a second water feature.

Room-only method. Some people bagua the office alone from that room's door. Useful when the whole-home north is a closet. Say so, so you do not mix house-north with room-front.

Water objects without the spill

Traditional pairing: water for flow, metal to feed water, earth to control water.

Practical list:

Living water is a different article: aquarium. Five-element theory: water element.

Do not stack fountain plus aquarium plus black paint plus three metal sculptures in one corner. One object you will maintain.

What to keep out of that corner

Clutter is the honest block. Broken chargers and a dead plant photograph as stalled work because they are stalled chores.

Earth-heavy decor (big ceramic jars, square sandy art) is the "controls water" caution in element talk. If you like the jar, keep it and skip the fountain. Do not run a symbolic fight on a 60 cm shelf.

Studio and rental limits

You get one wall. Choose door-center or north. A cart you can roll is better than nails you cannot take out.

Do not move the only table into a hallway to "stand in career." That blocks the mouth of the home. Entry wins: entryway.

A sequence for one evening

  1. Fix the chair so the door is visible.
  2. Draw one bagua. Circle one wall.
  3. Clear that wall.
  4. Add one lamp, cloth, or notebook.
  5. Work a week before you buy water.

What to skip

Do not promise a title, a raise, or a hiring email. Do not paste an App Store URL in the body. Do not put a fountain in the career gua of a bedroom if you sleep there; water at night is a common modern caution.

If the gua is a bathroom, the useful job is cleanliness and a shut door, not a career shrine on the cistern.

How to judge a change

You can point at one wall and say which school it follows. The desk still sees the door. Nothing is growing algae.

Scan the desk photos in FengShui Hero. Use this article for the overlay on the wall you already chose.

Sources and limits

Gua labels follow widely taught BTB and compass-bagua practice. They disagree with each other. Empirical research on Feng Shui as a whole is limited and mixed. HR and the labor market are out of scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the career area in Feng Shui?

It depends on the school. Compass talk puts career with north and the water element. BTB-style bagua often puts career on the wall of the entrance, the front-center gua as you stand in the door looking in. Those maps disagree in many floor plans. Draw both, then pick one.

What element is the career area?

Water, in the systems that use five elements on the bagua. Black, dark blue, a mirror, or a small fountain are the usual objects. Metal is said to feed water. Earth objects are said to control it. This is symbolic pairing, not a hiring pipeline.

Should I put a fountain in the career gua?

Only if you will clean it and it cannot spill on a laptop. A lamp or a closed notebook in that corner is enough. A fountain does not create a job. See the aquarium guide if you want living water.

Is the career area the same as desk position?

No. Desk position is whether you can see the door from the chair. Career gua is a map overlay on the home or the room. Do the chair first. Paint and objects in a gua second.

Can I activate career in a studio?

Yes, on one wall. Use the door-wall center if you follow BTB, or the north wall if you follow compass, not both at once on a 30 m² floor. Keep the path from door to desk clear.

Does FengShui Hero find the career gua?

The scan flags the desk sightline and clutter. It is not a bagua calculator. Use this article to choose one map, then apply objects on the wall you picked.
